Henrietta Stuart

Henrietta Stuart's evocative oils naturally traverse the expanse between field and Colour Field. Her landscapes, still lifes and lightplays fuse suggestive abstraction with limpid beauty. A natural world modulated by time and season discloses itself to us with visual textures that sweep across the eye and linger in the head.
'Firle' ripples with a powerfully observed starkness, while 'Riches' uses muted, blended tonalities to create an emotively rich smear of a still life, silver table ware as if seen through a window into another life from the window of a speeding car. Permeated by a clear-eyed melancholy, the work preserves a sense of place even in its most non-figurative form. Conveying a vital connection to her observed world, Stuart is a confident painter who knows how to draw the viewer into the heart of her elliptical sensibility.
Inspired by the work of Braque, Cezanne and Motherwell, she considers painting to be a "translation . . .the imaginative interpretation of . . .infinitely complex visual reality."
